  Venue: Meeting room 1 in 2nd Science Faculty Bldg.(澳门电子游艺场_越南鸿运赌场论坛-彩客网彩票推荐2号館 2F 第1会議室)

These are English lectures on natural science. Interesting content is presented in easy English on advanced topics in the fields of Chemistry, Biology and Astrophysics. We warmly welcome all foreign students studying at SAITAMA Univ. This is also a great opportunity for all Japanese students.

澳门电子游艺场_越南鸿运赌场论坛-彩客网彩票推荐学生の皆さんの聴講も歓迎です。理学3分野(生物?化学?物理)の英語セミナーをお楽しみください。

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10:10 - 11:00 AM Seminar in Chemistry
Prof. Akira NAGASAWA (Department of Chemistry)

“ Color of metal ions - Introduction to the coordination chemistry - ”

Some metal ions have various colors although others are colorless. Where does this difference come from, and what is the cause of the color? Coordination of molecules or ions onto the metal ion to form metal complexes is responsible for this phenomenon. We will outline the fundamental concepts of coordination chemistry.

13:00 - 13:50 PM Seminar in Astrophysics
Prof. Mario BERTAINA (Department of Physics, University of Torino, Italy)

“Cosmic Rays Physics and its interplay with other disciplines”

The seminar aims to give a general description of the origin and nature of cosmic rays and their connection with astrophysics and particle physics. A short summary on how they are measured from ground, on stratospheric balloons and from space will be presented. At the end some aspects that make the study of cosmic rays very interesting for its interplay with other disciplines will be briefly reported.

14:40 - 15:30 PM Seminar in Biology
Prof. Junichi OHNISHI (Department of Molecular Biology)

“How are we living? The Mechanism of ATP synthesis”

We (living creatures including humans) are constantly metabolizing nutrients and synthesizing/utilizing ATP (adenosine triphosphate) as an energy currency. ATP synthesis occurs in mitochondria, where electron transport system and a rotary motor F-ATPase are operating: the former redox (4H + O2 →2H2O) machine forms the hydrogen ion driving force (pH gradient plus membrane potential) across the inner mitochondrial membrane, which drives the rotation of the latter (imagine the H+-driven power turbine as in the hydroelectric power plant). We detail the metabolic importance of these two intricate machines.
